50:50 The Equality Project

2022 Shortlisted Nominee
Inclusive Culture Initiative Award

50:50 The Equality Project is a grassroots, data-driven initiative to address the historic imbalance of voices in the media. From small beginnings on one programme in the BBC newsroom, 50:50 has become the largest collective action to increase representation in BBC content, with 750 teams committed to featuring more women, ethnic minority contributors, and disabled experts in their output. Teams use simple, voluntary self-monitoring tools to change editorial culture and behaviours. The project has inspired a global network of 145 like-minded partner organisations in 30 countries, all of whom are counting the 50:50 way to improve opportunities for under-represented talent across their events, internal comms, published content and media spokespeople. The 50:50 team has won multiple awards for their innovative approach and recognition from across the D,E&I industry.
